La Asociación Venezolana de la Espina Bífida (A.V.E.B.), is a non-profit civil association created on April 25, 1985, with the idea of channeling private and public initiative and promote the welfare of all those children born with Spina Bifida and their family group.
Due to the critical economic crisis that our country going through, it is becoming more and more necessary to request help abroad in order to continue helping with our care programs and patients.
Each year around 500 babies are born in Venezuela with Spina Bifida (one in every 1,000 live births). The consequences of this condition include loss of sensation and weakness or paralysis in the legs and problems in the control of the bowels and bladder. Often (80%), it is accompanied by hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid inside the brain), which must be controlled quickly with a surgical procedure.
Spina Bifida is currently the leading cause of congenital paralysis worldwide. Despite this complicated picture, if these people receive timely help they can survive in the good physical condition and become individuals useful to society and integrated into their environment.
We provide continuous assistance to more than a hundred families and sporadically to more than 1000 families from the rest of the country.
The AVEB develops care programs in the areas of Orthopedics, physical medicine, and rehabilitation, physiotherapy, psychology, occupational therapy, Speech therapy, recreational therapy, urology, neurosurgery among others. In order for these children to develop properly, in addition to these attentions, the AVEB provides:
Economic support for surgical interventions
Valves for the control of hydrocephalus
Medical equipment
Informative talks
Diaper bank
Medicines
Orthopedic devices
Recreational activities
Crafts workshop
School support
Prevention-disclosure campaigns
All the care of our patients and their families receive are completely free, and that is why we need everyone's helping to maintain our programs.
