My name is Joe, and I’m very much your average 27 year old. Just like most Americans, I have a family that I love. We’ve had our ups and downs just like everyone else. That being said, I wouldn’t trade them for anyone in the world.
My father Tom had a tough childhood being 1 of 8, having to leave school to help put food on the table for his brothers and sisters. He’s always been a generous and selfless man. While he was working a job as a contractor, he fell off a roof. Since then, he has had chronic back pain. If you know anyone who suffers from chronic pain, you know how debilitating it can be. He has gone through more than any person should. He is not always able to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like a taking a walk with his wife, that we take for granted. There were times I thought I’d never see my dad as happy as I once knew him to be.
A few years ago my dad and I decided to go to a rescue shelter in a neighboring town. We didn’t intend to adopt that day, but once we saw Spidey, we had no choice. There were dogs who wouldn’t even come to the cage to greet us. There were dogs who were barking up a storm. Then there was Spidey. He chose us. He walked up to the cage, Spiderman costume and all. He greeted us, licked our hands, he chose us. From that moment on, my dad had a purpose again. Over the last few years, I’ve seen my dad smile like he used to, laugh like he used to, and even play like he used to. This dog saved my dad.
Yesterday Spidey was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his leg and my father, who is unemployed due to his chronic pain, just can’t afford it. And while my mom maintains that she “doesn’t like him’, she’s just as torn up as everyone else. She knows what this dog means to our family. My parents are looking at a bill of almost 5,000 dollars to save a loved one. For anyone who has ever owned a dog, you know that it is more than a pet, but part of the family. So I’m asking, no I’m begging that you help my family to help the dog that saved my father.
