On August 4, Beirut was devastated by two huge explosions after the calamity of the corruption orchestrated by politicians which devastated Lebanon. Lebanese have lived and are still living the biggest disaster in their contemporary history. They are currently suffering more than ever. Lebanese people are renowned for their ability to rely on themselves and to build and rebuild everything on their own. However this time it is different since they are exhausted and do not have the moral and economic resources to recreate their realities.

My name is Wadad Elias Fadel (Daddi Fadel), and I am directly related to this disaster. I am Lebanese and the explosions were behind my home. My mom was there alone. She immediately called us. My two brothers and I made a group call. She was obviously in shock. She could not speak or walk. We told her to leave the house immediately, we live on the top floor, but she couldn't move. She was trembling, crying, and was paralyzed. The explosion made her fly 3 m. Suddenly she found herself thrown to the ground far from where she was! We didn’t understand what was happening, so she tried to find out to stay safe in the house. She tried to slide to the ground on debris and broken glass to find shelter from other successive bombs! She was terrorized. We, three of us, here in Europe, felt so broken. and helpless but thanks to technology we managed to stay with her on the phone until her cousin arrived to take her away. The front door had exploded. Everything was destroyed. But thank God she is alive!!! And the good news is that finally, she will be able to join us in Europe. My brothers and I worked hard to make her a visa and let her come to France (with my brothers), despite the lockdown in Lebanon and the closed borders, because of COVID-19. France opened its borders on an exceptional basis in solidarity with the Lebanese! So on Thursday, she will be in France!

This experience was so awful and devastating for us. Although I was literally sick and I am heartbroken, I am so grateful and I feel incredibly blessed; my mom is alive and now she is safe. But, unfortunately, a lot of people lost their homes, offices, shops, ... Many of them lost everything. many lost their lives.

Lebanese people have lived, and are still living, the biggest disaster in their contemporary history. They are currently suffering more than ever. Lebanese people are renowned for their ability to rely on themselves and to build and rebuild everything on their own. However, this time it is different since they are exhausted and do not have the moral and economic resources to recreate their realities. Moreover, this pandemic has exasperated everything.

Melissa Barnett Erickson, Oliver Woo, Tom Arnold and I decided to help the victims of the recent explosion in Beirut. The goal of our project, Specialty Lenses - One World, is to assist both specialty contact lens patients and practitioners. We are involving specialty contact lens manufacturers as well as equipment manufacturers. Hopefully, you, our colleagues, will be able to assist us in donating money or products to those affected by this horrendous tragedy. We hope you will help us with this urgent humanitarian project.

With the money we are collecting with GoFundMe, we will buy slit lamps for the optometrists damaged from the explosions. We will pay the companies and ask them to send the slit lamps directly to Ahmad Cherri, the president of the local organization "Syndicat des Opticiens et Optometristes - LIBAN".

We know that “specialty lenses change lives.” This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to this exceptional cause.
Your small donation will make a huge difference! Thank you in advance!
