Bushwick has the most Spanish speakers of any neighborhood in Brooklyn. For 70,000 people, over half of all Bushwick residents, Spanish is their native language. Bushwick is also home to 38,000 people who ONLY speak English.
The fact that it isn't a given for anyone and everyone in Bushwick to have some basic conversational Spanish skills is an embarrassment at best and an aberration at worst.
That's the bad news. The good news is that we have a plan to fix this mess!!!
iSPANISH IS MANDATORY! is a 1.5 hour, weekly, drop in, donation based, no one turned away for lack of funds, open level, Spanish class. Each week an experienced and professional rockstar instructor will educate you like you’ve never been educated before by sneaking in all of the scary things like conjugations, tenses, and accents into a highly entertaining lesson plan for a guaranteed good time. The classes will lean towards Mexican and Puerto Rican Spanish (bye vosotros!) with the goal of becoming comfortable understanding and speaking Spanish. To keep things fresh, each week will focus on relevant and exciting situations and how to talk your way in and out of them.
The classes will take place on Mondays from 7:30-9pm at House of Yes, with a suggested donation of $20.
WHERE IS YOUR MONEY GOING?
Your generous donation will go towards ensuring that this program can sustainably operate for six months, regardless of how much the participants contribute financially. Aside from the six months you are helping fund, you are contributing to a cultural shift that emphasizes the importance of language and the role it plays in our community.
Our operating budget of 8K will cover:
- Professional, competitive pay for badass Spanish instructors
- A project manager to handle admin and logistics
- This amazing dry erase board which is on sale for $289.97!!
We believe that this program will easily outlast the six months and grow into something beautiful and permanent. We're grateful for people like you for trusting our vision and being here from the beginning.
