Friends and Family of Soozin Hirschmugl! If you know Soozin, you know how likely she is to show up in support of a person or project. Now she's  going through a rough patch and needs our support.  Her story follows...

My name is Soozin Hirschmugl and this is my GoFundMe.  Thank you for taking the time to read it!  This year also marked my 50th birthday and as a gift to myself, I made the decision to go back to school to pursue my Masters in Social Work.  After a year and a half of intensive graduate school work I proudly graduated in July with my MSW from Augsburg University and passed my license exam receiving my LGSW from the Minnesota Board of Social Work in the same month.  For my 50th year,  my plan has been to start a new phase in my career working with youth and their families as a school social worker.    Over the summer I brushed off my resume, spent some time enjoying time with my great nephews and their mama and began my job hunt.   Over the summer I started feeling extra tired and easily fatigued,  nauseousness, trouble eating, and a low-grade night fevers, and night sweats.  All things that lead me to feel like I needed to check in with my primary care physician to see if everything was ok.  On, Oct 4th I had a CT scan which revealed a large mass on my right Kidney.

The diagnosis due to the size of the mass and the spread of a few nodes to my lungs have classified this as a Stage IV Renal Kidney Cancer.  According to my doctor, Doctor Duffey, Kidney Cancer has a different type of treatment than other cancers.  Typically, the removal either as a partial or radical removal of the kidney.  My doctor is recommending a radical nephrectomy, removing the entire kidney and the adrenal gland.  This procedure will put me in the hospital for a week and then at home for recovery for a month following the surgery with follow up treatments once the tumor has been assessed.

So much information has been coming my way this week that it is really overwhelming, but I have been surrounded with friends and community support for which I am very grateful.   I am meeting with my doctors on Monday to set a date for surgery. Which may possibly occur as early as next week.   My oncologist is very optimistic that with the surgery my chances for living a long life are possible.  I am also feeling this positivity and hope.

The next few months are going to be a ride and since I am unable to work during this time and since I have not been working a full time benefited jobs as a grad school student.   I have been living close to the edge and I am concerned about how I going to be able to meet all of my expenses.  Today I met with an Oncological Social worker to determine what services I might qualify for.  We looked into disability and discovered that while I might qualify it will take up to five months for disability to kick in and typically one must have a disability for at least 12 months to qualify.  I am setting up this go fund me site to help with my monthly rent, utilities,  internet, and car expenses for the next three months few months while I am working through this new life circumstance and as I focus on healing and living with a cancer diagnosis.   Thank you for reading my story.  Thank you for being my cheerleaders and friend.  Thanks for holding me in the light during this phase of my life adventure.
