At 19-months-old, through a struggling battle of pneumonia, this family discovered that little Solomon’s heart just wasn't the same. Through rigorous tests they determine that this beautiful kid had what is called Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome which is defined as a congenital condition involving abnormal conductive cardiac tissue between the atria and the ventricles that provides a pathway for a reentrant tachycardia circuit. In short, this condition is an extra electrical pathway between sections of the heart that can cause significant heart issues if not treated.
Along this journey, we reach the time now when Solomon is 8 years old and undergoing surgery for this condition. The procedure requires them to make incisions in the pelvis region, enter through his Femoral Arteries to gain access to his heart, and use radio frequency ablation to eliminate the extra pathway. This procedure as you can imagine is quite risky and is not fully covered by insurance, leaving out of pocket medical expenses. The success rate is 85 to 90% of all patients will successfully have this corrected and begin to function normally. Solomon is that 15%. During post recovery, they identified through an EKG that this extra pathway had formed again and the procedure did not hold. The doctor performed the surgery well and Solomon is recovering but they failed to get the pathway and now Solomon will have to go through the procedure once again.
