Hi, I'm Ari and I used to work at Facebook. I'm still in touch with workers from FB, which is how I came to hear that a group of nine contingent workers was fired two weeks ago for violating a non-existent company policy. Many of them had organized together to better their workplace, and faced retaliation from management. I've also heard disturbing reports that Facebook has made false claims about the character of these folks on company message boards, and has ignored calls for transparency coming from other workers within the company.
Sudden firings like these are devastating, especially on the wage of $23/hour, and in the midst of damaging claims about your professional integrity. To support these folks in their hour of greatest need, I'm hoping to raise $40,000 to cover their basic living expenses for the next two months as they seek to clear their name within Facebook and find a new job on short notice. Anything and everything you give to this campaign will be directly sent to the workers themselves, and will be used to pay for rent, food, childcare, and healthcare.
Solidarity between full-time employees and contingent workers has made a difference in the past, and it can make a difference now. As at-will employees of Facebook staffing partners, contingent workers are not entitled to severance or even a warning when they are terminated. But together, we can help alleviate the urgent need for material support for them and their families.
