Solar Eclipse Field Trip or Bust!

Donación protegida
Last school year I began an initiative entitled "Igniting a Passion for Reading" within my classroom.  I voraciously read along with my students which sparked many captivating and authentice conversations about books.

One of the last books I read was an older title by Wendy Mass entitled, Every Soul a Star.  It was about three unlikely children befriending each other while all being at a star gazing campground called Moon Shadow.  They all came to the campground to witness a total solar eclipse.  Ms. Mass did an amazing job describing the stages of a total solar eclipse and at the end of her book she told about the solar eclipse coming August 21, 2017.  Immediately I thought I needed to read this book to my students so they are ready for the upcoming eclipse.  I began to read Every Soul a Star to my students as the basis of a mini science unit about solar eclipses.  On June 8th, the last day of school, I finally got to the end of the book when the solar eclipse takes place. Ms. Mass's description of the eclipse as seen through the three characters captured my students just like it did me.  The whole class exclaimed that they wanted to see the eclipse. At that time I told them that from our location it would only be at 87%  and that they wouldn't see Bailey's beads, the ring or the corona.  One student then said, "let's take a field trip!"   And that was when my idea was born.  It is a once in a life time event and inspiring my students is just what I was supposed to be doing.  What better way to do just that then seeing the TOTAL solar eclipse first hand.

Through research, I got connected to the Chair of the St. Louis Eclipse Task Force and he helped me make contact with the Superintendent of Festus School District.  The Festus Schooldistrict is willing to host my 44 students but I am in need of the food and transportation to get there.   I have received permision for the extended field from my school board  but I need to come up with the funding.

The funds raised will be spent in the following ways:

$3,200 for the Motorcoach bus
$200  for hotel for the bus driver
$850 for food, drinks and snacks for the students

We will need funding as soon as possible.  The dead line is August 11th, 2017. The plan is to leave our school on Sunday, August 20th, 2017.  We will sleep over on the Festus school grounds and we will return home after witnessing the Solar Eclipse on August 21st, 2017.

Please  consider generously supporting this once in a lifetime event for my students.  This whole adventure has come from my students' desire to read and the inspiration that is kindled by reading about the world they live in. It will be an unforgettable event that could potentially lead to future careers in science.

Thank you very much,
