Sofie's Sago Palm Project

Sago Palm Poisoning  Sofie was our 1 yr old puppy who died as a result of us having a Sago Palm plant in our backyard without knowing that this is a deadly plant to pets and even infants.  We had a larger dog for over 10 yrs who never had a diagnosed episode with this toxic plant.  Our other larger dog Cookie showed 2 symptoms - vomiting and diarrhea about a year ago but if it was a result of sago palm it was not diagnosed and she recovered maybe due to her sizeand was treated for GI infection.  Sofie showed the same symptoms and also was diagnosed as a GI problem but was told to bring her back to the vet if she vomited again.  When she did she was refered to Medvet who showed my son a picture of a sago palm which he immediately identified as having one in our back yard.  Unfortunately the toxins had done their damage even though we spent over $10,000 in vet bills in ICU to try to save her. This causes Acute Liver Failure if not diagnosed properly and treated in the first few hours.  There is no test to diagnose and there is no antidote.

If you are observant when you drive around you will see this plant every where. I believe every veterinarian office should have a large poster warning of this plant - If our vet had had one we would have been aware and would have removed it. Our 1st goal is to provide every vet office with a free poster to display. Our second goal is to have a requirement in each sate that a warning label is placed on each plant sold and/landscaping companies would have to advise the owner of the danger. This is required in some but not all states.
