A Social Grocery in Marseille

Social Grocery

Association V.I.S.A.S. 13 is planning to open a Social Grocery in the 13th arrondissement of Marseille.

We need to raise 50.000 Euros to open the Social Grocery and operate it properly.

Why do we need a Social Grocery?

In Marseille, nearly 112.000 people depend on humanitarian organizations and charities to cover their basic needs. The social grocery store opens in a former bakery between two sensitive districts, St Just and Malpassé, in the district of the 13th arrondissement where there is little social structure and a high need of support. It will be located at 93 Boulevard de Barry, between the metro St Just and Malpassé.

Who visits the Social Grocery?

The Social Grocery is open to all. There will be no obligation to present an identity document or to proof a certain social status. The Social Grocery is especially created to help those in need without any bureaucratic hurdles. It targets people who have limited resources but are not supported by food banks or solidarity associations, often leaving them in precarious situations, but unable to use social services because they are above the minima or because they do not have the necessary registrations, such as homeless people or refugees. The Social Grocery also helps elderly people that have decreased financial means but are too ashamed to visit a regular food bank.

What does the Social Grocery do?

At much lower prices, the Social Grocery offers basic necessities, food, maintenance and hygiene, such as:

Pasta
Rice
Semolina
Flour
Oil
Bread
Laundry Detergent
Soap
Toothpaste
Dishwashing Liquid
Maintenance Products

etc.

The Social Grocery benefits from an agreement with the Carrefour to give unsold food and allow the distribution, thus enabling people in need to have fresh food items, such as vegetables, fruits, meat and dairy products. The prices we apply will always be much lower than the prices at supermarkets, such as bread at 0.48 €, laundry detergent 3 L at 2.00 €, pasta at 0.75 € per kg, coffee at 4.20 € per kg, or diapers for 4 € per package.

Carrefour gives us between 1 and 5 tons of food and other necessities per week, in 2016 the Carrefour Grand Littoral hypermarket alone distributed nearly 2.200 tons of groceries. To around 300 families, we distribute free of charge fresh food, vegetables, fruits, meats, pastries, bread, yoghurt, cheeses.

For the second stage, it is planned to establish a social laundromat that will allow people without washing machines to maintain personal hygiene.

Who is Association V.I.S.A.S. 13?

V.I.S.A.S.13 is an association whose vocation is to support existing associations and organizations.

To do this we must understand the acronym of V.I.S.A.S.

Valorisation: people and actions carried out to help the poorest to be able to eat and be establish again a sense

Integration: of a population, victim of life, to get back into everyday life.

Synergy: means and men of each structure to create mutual assistance necessary to the accomplishment of our missions.

Action: daily aid that all associations bring to their beneficiaries.

Solidarity: of each industrial and commercial partner to provide us every day the possibility of acquiring on exclusive conditions food and non-food items.

V.I.S.A.S.13 was born of this desire to help the poor, but also to share its bargaining power with other associations. The aim is to find a balance between the subsidies that fall each year, and the growing needs of associations more and more people are depending on.

But the VISAS13 action does not stop with distribution, redistribution or product sharing, but thanks to its exchanges with its partners, the association can recover various items, such as medical mattresses, wheelchairs, beds, or medical items, which will be graciously offered to international NGOs for distribution worldwide to help sick populations, war victims, or countries in conflict.

We are a team of 12 people - with the help of Lion's Club (Chad), Knight of the Order of Malta (Mali, Niger), Ascomed Africa Italy (Libya, Ivory Coast) and AESD Berlin.
Just recently we have been able to receive a donation of medical supplies such as surgical gloves, syringes, compresses and have re-distributed them between several NGOs in Libya, Niger, Chad, Somalia, Gambia and Syria.

Why do we need your help?

We plan to open the Social Grocery on the 1st of July 2017. The owner of the property is making it available FREE OF CHARGE, but we need to carry out some necessary construction works. The company who will do that is sensitive to our mission and will only charge the real cost of the materials and the workers, but still this will amount to around 15.000 Euro.

Furthermore, we need to purchase a refrigerated truck for around 25.000 Euro which would allow us to collect fresh food from our partner stores.

Also, we want to install 3 washing machines and 3 dryers for around 10.000 Euro, to make them available to needy people to enable them to keep up with their hygiene.

Our goal is also to open more Social Groceries in Marseille and in the Provence Alpes Cotes Azur.

We want to raise 50.000 Euro to enable us to establish the Social Grocery and to offer a real support for the most basic needs to those who otherwise can’t afford it. We want to give dignity back to the people and by providing for the bare necessities, enable them focus on being independent again.

Please help us reach this goal - we are grateful for each single Euro that you might be able to spare!
