Smooshy's TPLO surgery

Smooshy (formerly known as Mr. Smooshy Face) was adopted by me on September 26, 2018, through Lifeline Animal Project at Dekalb Animal Services. He was dropped off by his previous owners in July 2018 because they could no longer care for him.

I saw his adoption video on Facebook and it had over 11,000 views. I literally had no idea how this dog was still at the shelter, he was incredible. I was in love with Smooshy the second I saw him. He was special - very different from any other dog I've met.

Once I met Smooshy, I realized he was probably still at the shelter because he looked like he had mange. Even if it wasn't mange, his skin was going to take a LOT of TLC. Smooshy was terrified to step foot outside when I brought him home. He couldn't go into the sun because he hurt so badly. He is terrified of any pressure on his neck. He still can't go on a walk like a normal dog. He sinks down into the ground out of fear. He is horrified we will leave him outside and he hates the car. Sadly, we haven't been able to work on much because he could not be outside much due to his skin.

My vet diagnosed him with Demodex Mange in early October. The start of a crazy, expensive adventure. He lost over 50% of his coat and he was completely bald on his chest. We started out with checkups once a week. Then we got to push it back to every 2 weeks. Then once a month. Finally, we started seeing the progress and all of his hair has grown back. He has a gorgeous, shiny coat and there are no mange mites!

Unfortunately, my other dog Sage was diagnosed with Discoid Lupus (DLE) in November through a biopsy. This was devastating to me because this disease just plain sucks and it is not curable. It was also extremely expensive to get this diagnosis. We had several vet visits prior to meeting with a specialist because no one knew what it was. This causes her own immune system to attack her body. This specific type of lupus attacks her face, causing her eyes and nose to bleed, scab, etc. She is on medication for the rest of her life and cannot go outside except to use the restroom. Her playtime outside is no longer an option. She has checkups with a specialist every 6 months or so unless things get worse.

In January, Smooshy started limping on his left hind leg after he ran around playing. It was bad, so I took him to the vet the next day. Almost $400 and some x-rays later, the vet told me he was pretty sure he tore his cruciate ligament. He told me to schedule with a specialist.

Less than a week later, Sage started having very heavy blood in her urine. I was terrified because I don't know if it was lupus, her medication, or something else. I took her to the vet as soon as they opened that next morning. Thankfully, it was not her lupus and it was just a very bad UTI and she was also dehydrated. Unfortunately, that was another $400.

After that, we decided to schedule an appointment with the specialist for Smooshy about his leg. Well, we just confirmed the news I did not want to hear. He has a complete tear in his left cruciate ligament and needs surgery. It's over $4,000 and I just don't even know how that's possible at this point after paying to treat mange and now having Sage diagnosed with lupus.

I am asking for help to get Smooshy the surgery that he so desperately needs and deserves. This dog loves to run around and play, it makes him so happy. I want him to be able to do that without being in pain. As one could assume, I am struggling after paying for mange and lupus treatments. We have had close to 20 vet appointments since September. The cheapest visit being $100. The most expensive being $950. I want to do this for Smooshy because this dog deserves the world. He is so thankful for his new life and he is everything to me.

Anything counts and it is so appreciated. Thank you so much for reading.
