Hello from Malaysia!
I am currently working as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in the beautiful, diverse country of Malaysia. My secondary school placement is in Perlis, the smallest, northernmost state in the country. Since my arrival in January, I have very much enjoyed supporting the English language programming at my school and forming close relationships with my students and community.
In order to support my students as they hone their English language skills, I am working with over 50 students aged 13-16 to write a book. The book, titled The Perlisians and Their Mangoes, will share about Perlis’ famous Harumanis mangoes and the role this fruit plays in the culture of Perlis.
The goal of this project is to share the culture of Perlis with others and encourage my students to think creatively as they practice diverse writing styles in the English language. This mango-themed book will include student-authored poems, short stories, profiles on Perlis mango growers, mango recipes, and an art and comic section.
Though an Embassy Grant will partially fund the printing costs of the book, I need to raise $1,000.00 USD to cover the remaining expenses. These expenses are printing 200 copies of the 80-page colored book and buying and printing t-shirts (with a book logo on the front) for the student participants.
In addition to funding my book project, I hope to raise an additional $500.00 USD to pay for an air conditioner for the teacher's office at my school (explained below) and to help fund a final school-wide Fall Festival English Camp I hope to facilitate before I leave at the end of October.
Every dollar goes very far in Malaysia and even the smallest of contributions will support me as I complete this project with my students. Just a $10.00 dollar contribution will cover the cost of printing one colored book and will provide a student with a t-shirt.

P.S. Following this campaign I will be selling these books for $15.00 USD. The profits from the book sales, in addition to any extra funding I receive here, will go directly towards fixing the broken air conditioner in the teachers’ office at my school. Without complaint, many of the teachers at my school work on their class preparation and paperwork in a very hot office. Malaysia is a very hot, humid country year-round so fixing this air conditioner would be very appreciated! It will cost roughly $250.00 to fix the air conditioner and it is my hope to surprise them with the funds to fix it before my grant ends in November.

$75.00 donation: Copy of the book, a signed postcard, and a personal thank you video from the students.
