Help bring Small Hadron Collider to Burning Man!

Donation protected
What is Small Hadron Collider?

Small Hadron Collider is an interactive LED light-art installation that lets users launch “particles” of light along a long LED strip that rises from the ground into an 8-foot high loop. Two people on either side of the loop can launch particles at each other by jumping up and down and watching them collide.

We have been fortunate to be selected as an honorarium project with partial funding from the Burning Man project. However, the honorarium grant does not cover our total project costs; honorarium members are expected to crowdfund their remaining project costs.

Who are we?

We are a small crew of friends lead by artists Rachel Ciavarella and Jack Kalish. We are experienced Burners and installation artists. We have created several honorarium installations for Burning Man in the past as well as interactive installations outside of Burning Man that have shown in museums, galleries, and festivals around the world!

We are passionate about bringing fun interactive art to the public with the hope of bringing people closer together.

What We Need

We are reaching out to our community for some radical participation; help us bridge our funding gap and bring Small Hadron Collider to playa!

Your contributions will help us up-level the sculpture for things like:

  • Sourcing higher quality materials (stronger trampolines, diffusion tube and platform)
  • Assisting with higher than expected transportation costs to and from playa. (Our original budget was granted when we were based on the West coast)
  • Allow us the potential to add additional interactivity components (like sound!)
We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you all interact with our art!

For donors who can make it to Burning Man, we will host a party for the donors at the sculpture during the burn. Time and date TBA.

Risks & Challenges

All ambitious projects have risks, but all experienced folks know to mitigate those risks. We are fully committed to bringing Small Hadron Collider to playa. One of the ways we're working to mitigate project risks is to test-run the sculpture at a regional event in May. This will allow us to stress test the sculpture and work out any kinks well ahead of Burning Man.

Another way we've worked to mitigate risks includes prototyping, check out some progress photos of our prototypes and material tests!

Other Ways You Can Help
We appreciate any and all financial contributions but understand it is not possible for everyone. Spreading the word about Small Hadron Collider and our fundraiser with your networks is another way to show your support!
