The Soul of the City Small Business Initiative

Small businesses - especially those in the food industry – are suffering as the pandemic surges on. Businesses like ours that became fully operational during the pandemic are not eligible for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) or the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) loans that are currently available as part of the new stimulus package.  Opening during the pandemic was not a choice for us. It was a matter of timing.  Many small businesses, particularly new businesses in the U.S., are in an "economic free fall" amid the ongoing spike of coronavirus cases and shutdowns.

We (Garnet Gal's Coffee Shop & Bakery) want to be here. We also want to help other small businesses in similar circumstances remain in business.  We are partnering with Groceries 2 Grow, a nonprofit free food delivery service, and The Book Bank Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on youth literacy to raise funds to keep small businesses open.  Donors who contribute $500 or more, will have the opportunity to schedule a private baking session for two in our facility.  Donors who contribute $250, or more, will have a Garnet Gal's bakery item made with our freshly milled organic flour named after them.  For those donors in the US, we will send an overnight package with their newly named bakery item, when they provide shipping details.

We opened this shop to provide healthier alternatives for breakfast and lunch -organic coffee and tea beverages, and delicious baked goods, scratch made with freshly milled organic grains.  We want to keep growing this dream, despite the obstacles in our path; and, we want to help others grow, as well.

In good times, when the economy is strong, funding a new business is full of strife and often not available for the first two to three years.  Now, in addition to the previous shutdowns and loss of business as more customers stay home, businesses that became fully operational after February 10, 2020 don’t qualify for the recent relief passed by Congress.

Please consider giving during these challenging times.   Your donations will help many of us get through 2021.  Thank you and stay safe.
