Sidney Goldfarb’s Long-Term Care

As many of Sidney’s friends, colleagues, and former students know, our father is currently living at Landmark Memory Care in Lafayette, Colorado. Several months ago, after developing severe edema, Sidney had to move out of assisted living, as they were not able to provide the lift he now requires to transfer from his bed to a wheelchair.  With the help of his geriatric care manager, Sidney was fortunate to find Landmark, where he is getting the increased medical care he needs. He describes feeling very well taken care of there, and he has been able to make his tiny room feel homey.

The predicament is that Sidney does not receive enough income from his retirement to cover the costs of his care. After paying for his basic needs - $6040 in rent, his medication, undergarments, bed rental, and phone - he has about $70 to $80 left. He is unable to pay for his other needs, such as unforeseen medical expenses, transportation to outside medical appointments, or his geriatric care manager, who has proven to be an essential component of his overall care. In addition, as our dad’s cognitive abilities continue to decline, he will be needing the help of a fiduciary, yet another expense.

The upshot is that each month Sidney is falling short by $300-$400. He has enough money to cover his expenses for the next three to four months, with the help of a generous friend, but after that he will be in a precarious situation.

Sidney did not want to send out this call for help himself, as he never imagined being in this predicament at this stage of his life. It is with his reluctant agreement, that we ask that you please consider contributing what you can towards his ongoing care. Our wish is for our father to have as comfortable and stable a future as possible.
