Let's start with this: My dog is my heart.
February 3rd his back legs were wobbly, he walked in a "drunken" manner, and every breath he took sounded strained. I rushed him to the hospital. Three days and four hospital visits later, he lost most of the mobility in hind legs, which is causing me to call out for help.
My dog, Shmitt, has been diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). The discs located in the space between his vertebrae are, "subject to a number of degenerative conditions and forces that predispose them to bulge or rupture over time." The vets gave me three different pain medications for him to take, which took the edge off, but it didn't stop the progression of the disease. Without an MRI we wouldn't know if a disc ruptured or is on its way to rupturing, therefore we are in a time crunch.
Doctor after doctor told me the same thing, "It's his back." "There is nothing we can do unless you allow us to take an MRI." "He will need surgery." "This is all we can do without surgery, I'm sorry."
After the neurological team gave their opinion, which agreed with the vets that had previously seen my dog, the hospital gave us the green light for the MRI.
The only downside is the cost. An MRI costs anywhere from $1500 to $3000, which is the same amount as the surgery, so in total, I am trying to raise five thousand dollars. I need to raise enough money for a 75% deposit on his surgery, or else in an unknown amount of time he could completely lose sensation and suffer permanent damage to his hind legs.
Please. Please, if you are an animal lover and if you understand what it's like to worry sick, help me. He needs this surgery... I need this surgery.
Five years ago he was brought to me for saving... little did I know that I was the one needing to be rescued. Please help me rescue Shmitt, help me return the favor to the little guy that saved my life all those years ago.
