She Changed the World

The posters on display

“She Changed the World”
started in the imaginations of the members of the Chapel Hill and Durham chapters of the National Organization for Women (NOW) as a way to commemorate the centennial of the ratification of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. It became a reality with the opening reception on Feb. 29th of the poster project honoring the 10 local women, chosen from those nominated who have contributed to their communities through their service and activism.

The response of those at the reception was gratifying. For the honorees, their guests, friends, families, and those who had worked on the project along the way, this was their first look at the finished posters. The display had the desired effect. Folks lingered to read the commentary on each poster and were awed by the work of the honorees. No one left without contemplating the final question, “What will you do to change the world?”  That call to action continues to be heard. The posters will remain on display at the Chapel Hill Public Library during March. In April they will move to the James E. Shepard Memorial Library at North Carolina Central

This is only the beginning

This project is not only about the past. It is about the present. The posters reveal the efforts of women to improve the lives of others. The examples of 10 women suggest that each of us can make a difference in the lives of others. It is a message of hope for the future in this time of anxiety and division.

The Chapel Hill and Durham chapters of NOW continue to search for further venues to display “She Changed the World” with the goal of reaching our neighbors across Orange and Durham counties in North Carolina.

Working to change the world

“She Changed the World” is part of the local mission of the National Organization for Women. Chapel Hill and Durham NOW educate and lobby in a variety of ways to move toward creating a more just society for all. In addition to using social media, we employ face-to-face engagement like demonstrations and rallies to work toward our goals. We also use print materials to inform the public about state and national legislation that will particularly affect women’s lives. For example, we encourage supporters to make their voices heard by providing stamped postcards to state and national representatives, addressing specific legislation. Though many of our activities only cost us our time and effort, others require ready funds.
