Shasta County UPEC General Strike Fund

The Shasta County General Unit is comprised of roughly 800 employees throughout all county departments. Jobs within our unit are among the lowest paid while also comprising nearly half of the county workforce. We are on strike asking for a 15% wage increase to help overcome the cost of inflation and medical deductions that have hit county employees hard over the last three years. Shasta County's Board of Supervisors has offered a total of 7% in wage increases over three years. This does not even meet the 8% inflation rate experienced in 2022 and would not cover other increasing costs felt by county employees. After bargaining with the Board, including direct appeals at public meetings, we were told flatly that the county's original wage offer is final.

Our last recourse is engaging in our legal right to strike. We do not take this decision lightly, as stepping away from our jobs can have a huge impact on the community we serve. It is also financially difficult for union members who are already paid a low wage to go picket for no pay.

This fundraiser will go directly into the fund already set aside by the Shasta County General Unit for organizing activities. This includes a stipend paid to members who picket on the strike line to help offset the loss in wages that comes with striking.
