At 2:00AM on Sunday June 16, 2019 Shari & Kenny Coatney's home in Thayer, KS was struck by lightning and burned down with only the stone chimney standing.  Besides Shari and Kenny, their daughter Kristin and two foster sons, Tyson and Dominic were living with them in the home. Needless to say they feel very blessed that no one was hurt which everyone is thankful for. But losing everything and having to start over is very difficult. Shari and Kenny are truly remarkable people. Shari is the CEO/President of Southeast Kansas Independent Living (SKIL) Resource Center in Parsons, KS. SKIL is a Center for Independent Living assisting people with all types of disabilities to live independently in their own homes. Kenny also works at SKIL building home modifications for customers and anything else SKIL needs him to do. As a manager at SKIL for 15 years, I could not tell all the stories about board members, staff, customers, family, friends, and even strangers that these two amazing people have helped. Shari has devoted her whole life to making sure that other people with disabilities are able to live the way they choose and she does it with a passion like no one else I know. They have brought foster children with significant disabilities into their home for longer than I have known them. Every year they go shopping at Christmas time to make sure SKIL customers, who do not have family, will have at least one present to open. Recently, they both took turns staying with a customer in the hospital for a couple of weeks to make sure he was not alone when he passed. Fifteen years ago Shari was the first to offer me a job when I lost mine due to reorganization at another CIL.  Two years ago when my brother Don, who had been retired from SKIL in Parsons and not responding to my families calls, it was Shari and Kenny who went in his home to find he had passed in his sleep. They then went in to empty his home of belongings donated for customers. As I said there are many, many stories as they have always been there for other people.

I ask that you please give what you can to help Shari and Kenny to reestablish a home for their family again. They are currently staying with her elderly parents but they will need to get their own place again soon. They will need everything including food, clothes, medications, furniture,  a home, etc. Every donation no matter how small or large will help. Please also keep them in your thoughts and prayers!

From Shari: They say friends walk in when the world walks out. On June 16, 2019 our home got struck by lightning, caught fire and was totally destroyed. My family and I ran for our lives and thankfully escaped. In addition to losing our home, we lost all of our belongings.
Our beloved family, friends, co-workers, church families and even strangers stepped up and gave us housing, furniture, clothes, household items and money. They set up a Go Fund Me account, a house fire shower and a constant outpouring of love, prayers and generosity.
In our 25 years at SKIL Resource Center, we have witnessed many tragedies and triumphs in the lives of people with disabilities we serve. The June 16th event was ours. Though losing our home and life’s possessions was devastating, the love, friendship and support from so many far overshadows the tragedy we suffered.
We are already re-housed, and we will continue on. Thanks, to each and every single one of you, for reaching out to us. We love you all.

Shari wanted to give everyone an update on how they are doing. They have been working with their insurance companies, the sheriff department, and fire department. Besides the house, Shari's vehicle sustained extensive heat damage also. They have found a house with enough bedrooms to rent in Thayer. They have gotten beds and a few other furniture pieces. The next steps are to get the house set up to meet all the requirements for their foster care license such as smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, bedding and other necessities. Shari said she just wants to get a home that she can tell Tyson and Dominic that "This is your bed.". She feels that they will feel much better when they are assured they have their own beds to sleep in and not feel like we are homeless. Shari doing what she always does, taking care of others. She said there are just so many things to do that she needs someone following her around "writing things down and checking things off".
Shari said she was talking to her sister a few hours after the fire on Sunday. Her sister told her that people are going to want to help and do things for you and donate to your family. (We know Shari has a hard time accepting from others because she is such a giver that she feels guilty that others deserve it more.) Her sister told her that she needs to just "Accept the Blessings!" because that is what these gifts are. Shari and Kenny greatly appreciate all the Blessings, including the help and thoughts and prayers that everyone has been giving them in the last two days. They feel greatly loved!
From Lou Ann--If you have donated to help Shari and Kenny's family, thank you! If you have not done so yet, please know that any contribution is helpful. It will take time for insurance to come through and even then it may not cover everything. Please help if you can.
