Abjit's Leukemia Surgery

Four months ago I received the news that my 14-year-old little brother was diagnosed with Leukemia. I know that not everyone has been through this, but for the ones that have, I'm sure you will agree with me saying that till now you still feel that you are just stuck in a bad dream...or at least hoping it's just that. A really bad dream.

Sadly, it wasn't. Next thing you know, he was in the hospital with tubes and needles 24/7. I should say now, that I live in Gainesville, FL and at that time my brother was still in Peru. I hopped in the first available flight. On my way there, all I could think about is seeing him, hugging him and telling him how much I love him, but he was in such extensive care that the only way for me to get inside was with a mask, a hospital robe, and tons of foam alcohol. Even with all that, I had to stay at least 1 meter away.

Days, weeks and months passed. We noticed he got a little better, but the doctor would always tell us not to put our hopes up, because the type of Leukemia he has(Acute Leukemia T-Cells) is an aggressive one. The odds were and still are against him. I was already back to the US by then, trying to seek help from everywhere and anywhere, but nothing. It was so bad that even the hospital from the school I go to (Shands UF Health) closed its door on my face. They didn't even bother to at least orient me where to seek help.

From back home things seemed to be getting better, at least that is what I was told. Then one day, all of a sudden, my dad called me from the airport letting me know that they were on their way to Houston. Abjit had a paralysis and they didn’t know what to do, so they decided to go to my uncle's place and take him to closest hospital. Luckily for us that place was MD Anderson (the best for cancer in the world). They accepted him there and right away they discovered that the leukemia cells went all the way to his brain. Apparently, the hospital in Peru didn't provide him with the right amount of medicine and chemotherapy he needed. 

We wanted to try taking him to St. Jude (a charity hospital which already declined him once) but Abjit didn't want to. When he talked to the doctors and nurses at Anderson, he felt so secure that he started feeling much better emotionally. After so many months, we saw him smiling and laughing again. His hopes high rocketed with them. So, even if we wanted to take him somewhere else, we couldn’t because of his delicate condition. Any stress or worry would put him in a coma. That is why we decided to keep him there and start looking for different ways to get money.

It's been a over a month. He is now feeling better. Doctors said that he will be ready for a bone marrow transplant pretty soon. They might even do the radiotherapy (for his facial paralysis), the transplant and ...all the treatments he needs at the same time. That is really great news for us, because it means that there is hope he would get better. But the truth is that we didn't expect all this to be so expensive. The money just flew away from our pockets to their bank accounts.

I love my brother with all my heart and I will do everything for him, but today he needs more than that. Our hands are tied and GoFundMe is our last hope to provide the best possible treatment for him. He needs your help... Bills are to the roof and anything can help. The transplant will occur on august, and after that he will be in extensive care. He has to do it when the doctor says so, otherwise his health can worsen.Please share this with everyone you know.
