Shannon Rogers Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
It is that time again when we all start to focus on our students who will be graduating and moving on to post secondary life. We have been lucky enough, through the generous donations at the time of Shannon's passing to start a memorial scholarship fund at Shannon's highschool. But it's not a typical, grade focused scholarship. In fact, grade don't come into play at all.

Shannon was a perpetual student who loved to learn. This didn't always mean in a classroom either. She was a student of equality, inclusion, kindness and generosity. She learned what it meant to give back to others and to support those who were marginalised by our communities and society as a whole.

It is with this in mind that we, Shannon's family have set the criteria for this scholarship based on community involvement, and the personal characteristics of the recipient. We feel that in today world, we need more kindness, more young people willing to stand up and effect change.

The characteristics of the recipient will follow theses attributes:
Empathy, Patience, Perseverance, Kindness, and Compassion.

These are all traits that Shannon drew upon during her 6 year battle with Ewing's Sarcoma at the age of 16. She continued her University studies despite needing to travel nearly an hour each way for daily chemotherapy, she completed her first 2 years with honors and made the dean's list. Sir Wilfred Laurier University was so honored to have her apart of their school community that they recognized Shannon's hard work both in and out of the classroom with a Posthumous degree following her passing.

It is in this spirit that we ask for your support in allowing us to continue to honor a student showing these same remarkable traits for years to come.

This scholarship and all its funds are held and distributed by the Avon Maitland District School Board. Funds raised will be given following the closure of the fundraiser directly to the school board to be held in account for upcoming school years.

Thank you for considering supporting the youth in our community who are leading the future! May it be a future of kindness!
