On November 28th, Shane Roberts, husband of Courtney and father of Owen and Abigail, was in a terrible accident while driving on the interstate. He sustained very serious injuries and was immediately airlifted to Gainsville, Florida, where he is still in the ICU.
Thankfully, things are looking up: he got through all the major surgeries, and the nurses are encouraged by increased alertness and responsiveness. We are so grateful that he is alive and progressing!
There is a long and hard road to recovery which includes a very lengthy hospital stay in Gainsville, multiple surgeries, and in-patient physical rehabilitation once he is allowed to travel back to Savannah. He has a dislocated elbow, five dislocated fingers, fractured ankle, and broken hip. He'll be arthritic in that joint within a few years and need a full hip replacement later. The biggest unknown is how he will recover from the traumatic brain injury. He has sustained a DAI (diffuse axonal injury).
Shane has been awake, off the ventilator, and off sedation since December 4th; as is normal with any injury of this nature, his mental progress is slow. But, he continues to make small improvements every day, and the hope is that he will be able to recover fully with time.
