My name is Shakirah Stephens. I am a Junior Audio Production Major, Theatre Arts Minor at Howard University. I studied at Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 for middle and high school with a major in musical theatre.
I am very dedicated to the arts.
In addition to my passion for the arts, I have always been interested in the Spanish language. I have been studying the language and culture since I was in the 4th grade. I have been wanting to visit a Spanish-speaking country since I was 12 years old.
Fortunately, I have been accepted into a study abroad program in which I will be traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico! Naturally, I was very excited to be accepted. While there, I would be taking two Spanish courses totaling in 6 credits toward my education. I would also get to indulge in and learn about the culture, lifestyle, and people of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Unfortunately, as many of you know, my dad was recently diagnosed with cancer, which puts a financial strain on my family. I contemplated not going because of the financial committment and the burden it would create. However, my family are determined to make a way for me to have this experience.
This is where you all come in should you choose to help. Below is the breakdown of the cost of the trip:
Program Responsibility
Program cost - $3,700 (room, classes, 2 meals per day)
Airfare - $800 + (cost of airfare increases, depending on when ticket is purchased)
Passport & Vaccinations - $200
Spending money - $500 (recommended amount)
Total Cost - $5200
