Service Dog for Laela

My friend’s name is Laela. She is a 16 year-old high school student at Mid Prairie in Wellman, Iowa. Before I tell you about the challenges she faces, I want you to know about her incredible abilities!
Laela is an honor student, sister, friend, daughter and ‘influencer’. She has accomplished much in her short life and is a true visionary. Even though she could easily dwell on the negative of her challenges, her glass is always full. She has participated in softball, volleyball, soccer, cheerleading, Art Club and Math Club to name a few. >>
Laela was born with three major congenital issues with the biggest challenge being bilateral microtia. Bilateral microtia a congenital deformity with closure, or absence of the external ear canal, this deformity almost always causes hearing problems. In Laela‘s case, without her Baha implants she faces very severe hearing loss.
Since birth she has faced so many medical procedures and surgeries that she has ‘lost count’. Laela is also prone to frequent infections at the site where the clip is anchored to her bone. And when Laela sleeps or bathes, she must remove the devices completely. How would you wake up on time if you couldn’t use an alarm clock? Or in an even more serious situation, be alerted to a fire without the sound of a smoke detector!
Because she can’t always rely on her Baha implants, it is Laela’s dream to be matched with a hearing service dog! In two years she will be eligible to attend college, but only if she can gain independence. A hearing service dog would help with things Laela currently relies on her mom to do. Things like waking her in the morning, alerting her to dangers/emergencies, or even something as simple as notifying her if someone rings the doorbell. All the ’little things’ we take for granted!
Because of the expense of a hearing service dog, it is impossible for Laela to fund her dream without your help! Training a puppy would usually cost $18,000-$20,000. But Laela has been given an incredible gift - a trainer has offered to take on the challenge for significantly less! Even with that it will cost an estimated $12,000 .
By raising $12,000 for a hearing service dog, we can help Laela achieve her dream! Any amount you can donate will help. If 300 sponsors donate just $20 each, we will be halfway to our goal!
