Service Dog for Emmersyn

Donation protected
Emmersyn was diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) in January 2020 due to a history of traumatic events. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.

Emmersyn struggles on a daily basis to manage his emotions and often has outbursts of rage. These behavioral issues associated with PTSD make daily tasks, social events, adjusting to change, attending school, & socializing with others very challenging for Emmersyn.

It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to help defend against danger or to avoid it. This “fight-or-flight” response is a typical reaction meant to protect a person from harm. Nearly everyone will experience a range of reactions after trauma, yet most people recover from initial symptoms naturally. Those who continue to experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger. It causes affected individuals to experience flashbacks, hyperarousal, nightmares, dissociation, an exaggerated startle response, and fearful behavior.

Psychiatric Service Dogs reduce the frequency and severity of depressive episodes, perform behaviors automatically and/or on command that reduce the frequency, severity, and/or duration of panic attacks, provide a buffer from crowds, facilitate social interaction, and bolster general relaxation and confidence. When, requested, they can also perform other specialized behaviors, such as room searches and turning on lights.

The cost to train a PTSD Service Dog can astronomical and can range from $7,000 to over $15,000

We have opted to do a "Shelter to Service" program and have adopted a sweet Labrador Retriever (Hamilton, 7 months old) from our local animal shelter that will begin Basic Obedience training with a reputable local trainer. Once Hamilton's Basic Obedience training is complete, he will begin the Service Dog Training Program.
