Servant's Code Launch

The world is changing and the Catholic Church needs to continually find new ways to speak to those living through those changes. Servant's Code is here to help.

My name is Greg Leitheiser, servant leader at Servant's Code. We're a non-profit community dedicated to the service of the Church.

Like it or not, the world is undergoing a dramatic change. New technologies appear on a seemingly daily basis. Laptops and tablets allow us to work anywhere. Smart phones keep us in constant contact with people and information no matter where we are. Virtual reality allows us to be anywhere in the world without having to travel there. These tools, and so many others are rapidly changing the human experience.

While many of these changes are good, the pace of progress also presents new challenges for us to contend with. These new tools have created a new way of living, a digital culture, where technology intermediates our connections with other people.

While it has many advantages in access to communications and information, this digital culture also has challenges which must be addressed. Despite our constant interactions, relationships formed online maintain a certain superficiality. The online world values hundreds of weak social connections over a few deep relationships. According to widely cited statistics, the average Facebook user has 338 friends, but in real-life they have 9.

For many, this digital culture of many weak relationships creates a pervasive sense of isolation. This is the most important cultural challenge of our time.

Thankfully, there is a tried and true solution to this situation. 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ came to Earth to teach us a better way to live. In doing so he created a Church, the Catholic Church, to show us the way.

In 1979, John Paul II taught us that the Church is “is called to bring the power of the Gospel into the very heart of culture and cultures.” This must be seen as a call which includes the digital culture.

Our mission is to change the way that we create and use computer software to build the Catholic Church.

Servant’s Code is built upon the insight that strong, personal relationships formed in community are the driving force behind healthy, vibrant Christian life. When we work, live, pray and play together, we become the hands and feet of Jesus to each other and to the world. This insight pervades everything we do at Servant’s Code, which is why we’re founded as a non-profit, lay religious community instead of as a typical software business.

We build community by developing open-source software solutions. This means that anyone who wants to help us build the future can do so!

We build community by partnering closely with parishes to help them use our tools to run their parishes more efficiently and strengthen their ministries’ outreach.

We build community by providing tools that help the faithful engage with their parish online and in real life. In doing so we help to bring the light of faith into the online world, and those trapped in isolation into the real-life community of Christ.

If this sounds interesting, we need your help!

First off, always and everywhere, pray for us. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, and we need intense spiritual support to make this work.

Second, please consider a donation to our work. This GoFundMe is to help us feed our families and our servers.

Third, if you have software development or testing expertise, please get involved in our work. You can find the details on our web site.

With your support, we can change the way that we do software as a Church!

Our first step in this process is to create parish management tools to help parish staff to operate more efficiently, to know and communicate with the people they serve. A video overview is available in our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5_GyvSxEJgo4uEeZqYLyOQ.

Thank you, and God Bless!
