Send Yes Prep to Moot Court Finals

Help Send 4 Finalists to Moot Court Competition!

It is our mission at Yes Prep West to empower students and families.  To that end, we have partnered with the South Texas College of Law to bring the Marshall Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project to West.  This program brings law students from STCL to West to teach our juniors and seniors the basics of constitutional law and prepare them to compete against students from all over the country in the annual Moot Court competition finals, which this year will be held in Boston.

This year, we need your help to send our four finalists to the national competition in the spring of 2018.

YES Prep is a Title I charter school system serving students from low income families in southwest Houston. 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of them have never left Texas or been on an airplane. A trip like this will significantly expand their worldview and expose them to countless new ideas and opportunities, as well as provide a unique opportunity to preview the law profession.

While housing is taken care of by the Marshall-Brennan Program, we still need to fundraise for airfare for 4 students and 1 chaperone, meals, and travel expenses not covered by airfare by March of 2018.

Please consider donating whatever you can. Every dollar makes a tangible difference in these kids’ futures.

West is currently the only school in Houston that participates in the Marshall Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, the benefits of which extend beyond the students enrolled to affect our entire campus, and our broader community.  Through this elective, we provide our students with what is in many cases their first contact with law students and give them an inside look at what it means to pursue law as a career.  As a direct result of this elective, a number of former students are now themselves beginning to pursue law as a career, a prospect that few amongst them would have imagined for themselves before having met their law student teachers and gone through the class. While still at West, participating students have mobilized to inspire civic engagement amongst their peers, including designing a campus-wide voter registration drive that has since extended to the district and also to our community.  In short, the benefits of participating in the Marshall Brennan program extend beyond the students enrolled in the class to their peers and the community.
