Passing The Torch

For masters of their craft, there is  great honor in passing their knowledge down to their students, just like veteran B-Boy crew, Knucklehead Zoo (KHZ) is doing with their successors, the Break Ninjaz.

The Zoologic Break Ninjaz  are a Las Vegas-based crew of kids and their instructors. Together, through countless hours of hard work and sacrifice, they have achieved the unimaginable and their efforts have been rewarded with the chance of a lifetime: To showcase their break dance skills at the most important event of the year, in Montpellier, France at the international B-boy competition, Battle Of The Year.

Ranging from 7-35 years old, Zoologic Break Ninjaz are an eclectic group qualified to represent the USA at Battle Of The Year. Considered the premier event in the B-Boy community, breakers compete all over the globe for a chance to go up against the best in the world. Two Las Vegas crews, KHZ and Super Cr3w have been to the event several times (KHZ’s first time was documented in the film, “Planet B-Boy”). So, to some, it may be no surprise that they took the U.S. qualifier again in 2018, but this year it means so much more because it marks the ceremonious occasion where one generation will pass the torch to the next.

The reality is, when it comes down to it, the Break Ninjaz aren’t simply pupils and instructors. They’re a crew.

The Goal

The goal is to get the whole crew to Montpellier, France on November 14-19, 2018 so they can break side-by-side as they do every day at Zoologic Studio. They learn together, they struggle together, they train together, and they want to show the world what they’ve got…together.

To get the full crew of around 20 kids to France is a costly undertaking. Although Battle of the Year is paying for some of the qualifying team to get there, there are still many expenses including airfare, hotel rooms, food, and transportation for much of the crew. We are fundraising to get the entire Break Ninjaz crew to France. All monies raised in this fundraiser are solely to fund this trip.

The Work

The Break Ninjaz and those that have paved the way before them work tirelessly day in and day out to perfect their craft. Instead of playing video games or watching TV, these kids master headspins and practice air flares. Every day after school they hit the studio to perfect their footwork and learn different freezes. But beyond the breaking skills, they are learning an important lesson: that to achieve their goals, they must put in the work.

They aren’t asking for a handout, they are willing to hustle for the generous donations to help them reach their goal. On top of the countless hours they put in at the gym every day they will be performing at events around Las Vegas to help spread the word. Look for updates here, as well as Instagram and Facebook on where to see them next!

The Break Ninjaz want to make Las Vegas and the U.S.A. proud by showing that breaking culture will live on and flourish through the camaraderie of the generations.
