Send Monica Abroad

Monica is a fantastic college student at University of California Santa Barbara that has worked hard to earn her scholarships and straight A's throughout her educational career. She will be spending Fall Quarter of her senior year in Argentina and Chile, as she was selected to participate in UCEAP's Human Rights and Cultural Memory Program.

She is a Sociology Major with a Minor in Education, and has a drive to understand and assist others in any way she can. Last August, Monica was selected to participate in an internship abroad with Fundación Paraguaya, where she was helping introduce new methods of learning and understanding at one of their self-sufficient vocational high schools. The experience ultimately changed her life, as she realized that the experience of those in other countries differ from hers here in the states immensely. Her experience encouraged her to apply for this specific program in order to educate herself more on the experiences of these "underdeveloped" countries and how they are pushing to recover and catch up to the current economic superpowers the surround them, as well as trying to see where it is that she might be able to help and make a difference one day. Specifically, the UCEAP participants will be studying about and in cultures and communities that are recovering from traumatic revolutions and that are continuing to strive for basic human rights.

So who is Monica?  Monica is a Cloverdale native who is a motivated student who started school in Cali Calmecac Language Academy in Windsor. She transferred to Windsor High School where she graduated with honors in 2016. She has always had a passion to help out her surrounding communities. Her Senior Year of High School she created and maintained a free tutoring for the youth in local middle schools; and was awarded the Press Democrats Youth Service Award for Community Action.

She applied and was accepted to UC Santa Barbara where she has maintained being on the Deans list the last three years! She actively participates in her schools Guardian Scholar Program-- a program for former foster youth in higher education,-- and acts as a liaison for incoming students who identify as former foster youth.

Monica continues to apply for scholarships in order to help her fund her education while working more than 40 hours a week and going to school full time throughout the school year and summers. She is still waiting to hear back from two more scholarships, is working the summer in order to try and make enough to cover the difference of her abroad program.

She will be graduating this upcoming June, and will be the first person in her immediate and extended family to do so. She hopes to continue her education at UCLA School of Law and receive her Juris Doctor with a concentration in international law. She hopes to serve not only her  community, but communities around the world when it comes to basic human rights and amnesty.

Monica is extremely hardworking, humble, and caring. She could really use your help so that she can get one step closer to her dream. Donate, and share!
