SEND MISS STUCKEY TO UNIVERSITY
As many of you know, I am very passionate about teaching! But, I've only realized this after I had graduated from Universityin Innsbruck, majoring in English. I graduated with distinction. My GPA in Austria was 1.06 which corresponds to 4.0 in the US.
However, after graduating and working in linguistic research, I decided to give teaching a try and while working successfully with teenagers, especially those who come from less ideal conditions, I realized that teaching and working with kids was my purpose, I had finally found what I was meant to do.
I also knew, I needed to go back to school so that I could get properly educated, equipped with the tools I need to continue to make a difference. These tools I will receive at the University of Michigan Flint, where a special masters program in urban education prepares teachers to work with kids from the inner cities, kids who face challenges that can make going to school and graduating hard .
However, as you know, tuition is costly in the USA and I am trying everything to cover those expenses debt-free or at with least as little debt as possible.
Tuition alone for the 2 years will be around 24,000 $. Then there is rent, food, insurance, transportation and of course the financial challenge of moving from Italy to Michigan. I will be moving this August 2018 and starting school September 2018.
You might think, "well, why Michigan?"
The program is unique. I will be shadowing teachers at schools the first year and student teaching the second year, while actual classes I need to attend are held once a week for a whole day. Hence, it is hands-on experience. Teaching is all about actually standing in a classroom. The program will give my knowledge in psychology, education, English as well as Maths and will equip me with lots of experience for me to teach kids from all backgrounds and all over the world.
I don't mean to beg for anything, I simply thought that every dollar would help me continue my calling as a teacher. And I am asking you to help me fulfill my dream, to continue making a difference in this world. By helping me, you will be helping kids sitting in my classroom in the future, you will help make a difference, you will help educate our future. I walk the extra mile for my students, whom I always refer to as my kids. Last year, I started taking some of my kids out to play basketball or even hockey on weekends because I just couldn't believe that they spend their weekends mostly at home alone. I unofficially counselled and tutored 2 highly at risk kids quite successfully. I try to make kids feel that they are being heard and seen, that somebody cares and lovey them, and that it is okay to be who they are or who the aren't.
