The first time I was ever able to step onto a stage was about 8 years ago at a summer theatre camp for middle schoolers, and I tagged along with my older brother. Ever since that director, Mr. Mark Erskine, put me up on the stage, I knew the theatre was something that I loved. I was truly inspired to continue my life on stage.
In the years following, I took part in different theatre clubs at school and even took an MT class at Sussex Dance Academy, where I took on my very first role as White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, Jr. From there I continued my life on stage, joining in with the Possum Point Players affiliate group, the Possum Juniors and the New Faces of Shakespeare. In just the past 3 years, and at various theatre companies, I have been in 15 different productions, from musicals to plays to Shakespeare and more.
In the summer of 2016, a good friend of mine, Devon Lynch, along with the Possum Juniors, gave me an experience I will never forget. That summer, I was the stage manager for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is what made me realize that I wanted to be a stage manager. For countless other shows at Possum Point Players, I have been backstage as either a part of stage crew or doing hair and makeup. Being able to see shows transform is truly amazing, and to be a part of that is even more incredible.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I got a big packet in the mail from the National Student Leadership Conference, and a letter asking me to represent my school, Sussex Central High School, in the 2018 NSLC at Fordham University for Theater for my academic achievement and leadership qualities. The NSLC Theatre Program is a 9-day summer intensive, where students live on campus and attend classes and seminars on acting, directing, stage managing and design, along with meeting big-name actors and directors in New York and spending evenings in the audience of Broadway shows. I couldn’t believe it, someone at my school had nominated me and I was accepted! As soon as I read that letter, I rushed all of the information to my mom, begging to let me go, only to be disappointed to hear that the program would cost $3,000 and we couldn’t afford it.
When I asked my theatre teacher, David Warick, what I should do, he told me to raise as much money as possible, because this program will help make my dreams come true.
I know this number is very large, but every dollar counts. Please help send me to this incredible summer program. For more information on the National Student Leadership Conference, you may visit
