Carmen Cain was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister. And for the past 16 years, she cared for Joshua, who has autism.
Carmen passed away on August 29, 2018 after being diagnosed two weeks before with sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. She had crappy insurance, the kind you get by working as a care provider for In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS). She showed up at the clinic and various emergency rooms many times and was turned away or given poor care.
With sarcoma, every day without getting treatment matters. After almost four weeks of incredible pain and being ignored, the county hospital gave Carmen her diagnosis and said that there was no chance of treatment.
Carmen and her family deserved better. Joshua deserved better.
Carmen has been taken from us at the young age of 57. She leaves behind a daughter, Kelsey, an adorable granddaughter, Raquel, as well as siblings who love her.
Carmen was from Belize and always had wonderful stories to tell about growing up there. She had always hoped one day to retire in her homeland.
Carmen's dying wish was to return to Belize and be buried next to her mother. But Carmen, who devoted her life to aiding people with disabilities and seniors, left this earth with few resources. Her family is hoping to raise the money to get Carmen back home - one last time. Unfortunately, the cost involved in getting Carmen to Belize is about $7,000.
