Scott Whiting's fight against cancer

Donation protected
Scott Whiting was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in early August 2022, after a routine checkup.

Up until July of this year, Scott was hitting golf balls at the driving range and the golf course, and riding his bicycle on the Katy Trail with his loving wife, Viola. They were hoping to eventually retire and enjoy life by taking off and doing some traveling.

At the beginning of August, after suffering from severe back pain and numbness down this right leg, the MRI and CT scans found that he has stage 4 lung cancer – even though he has routinely been to see his doctors and no cancer issues were ever on the radar.

In the last 12 weeks, he has been in the ER several times, in-patient rehab at Capital Region Medical Center, Missouri University Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and the Veterans Hospital in Columbia, while also undergoing Radiation and Immunotherapy.

As of mid-August, due to the pain and numbness in his legs, he was in a wheelchair. As of right now he’s unable to get out of bed. Thankfully, Scott was in the Navy, and is a patient of the VA, so the Veterans Administration is supposed to be paying most of the hospital bills and they have really treated him very well.

Unfortunately, there have been extensive costs and hardships for many other things: converting the home to be wheelchair friendly, building a ramp to get into and out of the house, lots of trips and time spent driving and staying in the hospitals and doctors’ visits, not to mention all the heartache that comes along with this kind of diagnosis.

Their lives have been turned upside down to say the least. Scott is no longer able to work. Scott’s wife, Viola, is his caretaker and he requires 24/7 care. The pain of his disease is affecting them both on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, we have now received the devastating news that there’s not much more the doctors can do for him. Doctors have recommended hospice care. In spite of all this, we will continue to fight.

We’ve started this gofundme to help Scott & Viola with living expenses and help alleviate some of this financial burden on the family. The thing about Scott is, if you know him, you know that he has always been there for others over the years. Personally & professionally, Scott has been my “right hand man” for over 20 years and I would not be where I am today without his support, mentoring and endless hard work. Now it’s our turn to take care of the guy who has tirelessly supported and helped so many of us over the years.

While we know many of you will want to reach out to Scott and Viola directly, at this time we ask that you please refrain from blowing up their phones and instead leave as many positive and encouraging notes below. This page will be updated regularly to keep everyone abreast of Scott’s condition.

In the blink of an eye, anyone can be touched by an unexpected accident or devastating illness. And a medical crisis is made worse when it becomes a financial crisis. We thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Sincerely,
Scott Tremain
