School Supplies Drive for Los Cacaos, Salcedo, RD

My parents were born in the Dominican Republic in their respective small towns, and I have been blessed enough to get to know their hometowns while growing up. My father is from Las Amapolas, Hermanas Mirabal and my mother is from Los Cacaos, Salcedo, which is less than 5 minutes from each other. A few years ago the primary school in Las Amapolas was closed due to lack of funding and all of the kids were forced to go to Escuela Primaria Ramon Vargas in Los Cacaos. While the teachers at Los Cacaos try to do their best with what they have, there are times when school is canceled for the day due to lack of electricity, supplies, or nourishment. As you can imagine, this not only impacts the students' education, but causes stress for them, their teachers, and their families alike.
Since the spread of COVID-19, schools have closed and students are being taught virtually through modalities such as WhatsApp or Zoom. However, internet service is unreliable and many simply just do not have access causing students to fall behind. Many parents have also lost their jobs or had work hours drastically reduced due to the government closing non-essential businesses.
With your support, we can help alleviate the financial burden for parents and help the students get motivated for the upcoming school year. Escuela Primaria Ramon Vargas in Los Cacaos is home to 100 students between Kindergarten and 8th grade. With your donations, 100 students will be given new backpacks fully supplied for the year and their teachers will have basic classroom supplies to help get their year started.
My goal is to have the money raised and supplies ordered by June 30th, 2020 to make sure they are shipped with sufficient time to be distributed to the students in August.
