St. Vincent’s School Fundraising - Kenya (Phase 1)

Five Elephant Coffee  & Friends are organizing a fundraiser for The Saint Vincent’s School in the Kerugoya region of Kirinyaga, Central Kenya to accommodate a growing number of children in the community.  We would greatly appreciate your help.

About the project:

At Five Elephant, we source coffee from a small coffee estate named The Juliet Estate. After a few years of visiting the area to work on our coffee quality project, we were told of a need to build a new school in the area to accommodate the growing number of children. The closest school was 4 kilometers away, which is a long walk for a small child. When these distant schools reached capacity, many of the children did not have any options, which is how the idea for The Saint Vincent’s School was born in 2017.

 

 

Our partner Julius Mariuki, the Chairman of The Saint Vincent’s church, asked us if we could support the project, which was stalled due to lack of funding. With our assistance, they were able to finalize the structure for 2 classrooms, along with building child-safe toilets and a playground. Each year on our visit we bring writing and math books, along with pencils and art supplies to the teachers for each child, which has now grown to 5 classes (2 pre-k and a class for Grades 1-3).

 

 

In November 2021, we have visited the school and have seen the need for two new phases of funding, the first of which we call Project 1.

 

 

Project 1: Computers and Electrical, Educational Material (Winter/Spring 2021/2022): Budget €2500

 

In this phase, we will focus on raising funds for electrical wiring, computers, and educational materials/supplies.

 

There is an urgent need for the teachers to have access to computers for organizing the curriculum and printing out materials for the students. With the opening of a new school administration office, we will need at least 2 computers and printers. Additionally, the wiring of electricity from the mains box at the church will be performed by an authorized local electrician.

 

With the school now with over 85 children, the need for school supplies becomes greater. We want to make sure we have enough materials for each of the 85 students, during the entire school year and this phase will cover the next year's materials for each child. This will include writing, math, art, science, and reading books, along with pencils and art supplies.
