Saving Kiba

This is my 3-year-old husky mix, Kiba. One of the sweetest, loving and gentle dogs I have ever known. One of his best friends is a 5-month-old Pomeranian puppy, who he lets crawl all over him. He’s quiet and calm and friendly to pretty much anyone he meets, both dogs and people. Not everyone will share this opinion, but in my world; dogs are not just man’s best friend, but they are our equals. My two dogs are my children and I love them just as much as any mother loves her human children.

On Saturday, 14th October 2017, Kiba had to undergo emergency surgery to remove two pieces of a rubber chew toy that had become lodged in his small intestines. It took all day to decide that surgery was the best option so he first had to deal with a whole day of x-rays and blood tests. But when they couldn’t find out what was wrong with him, they were only left with that option. We pick him up around 10 pm and took him home. But Sunday was a tough day, he would neither eat or drink on his own, and we were told by the vet that we could try to feed him with a syringe, which worked fine. But when we brought him back for a follow up on Monday, the vet did not at all like the look of him and said she expected him to be much better by then. They decided to keep him for observation and see what they could do for him. Around mid-day they had given him all the medical help they could, but he had not responded to any of it and prepared me that I might lose him. The only thing left to do was to open him up again to see if his poor condition could be due to a complication from the surgery. This turned out to be the case as his intestines had become glued together and formed a tangle. They amputated a section of the intestines which was damaged and caused the tangle. We were again allowed to take him home on Monday, around 18 pm. But it wasn’t long before we realised that all was not as it should be. He still would not eat or drink and before long, he began throwing up. We rushed him back to the on-call vet and it was decided that he would spend the night, receive fluids, painkillers, antibiotics and anti-nausea meds. He did alright through the night, but the next day, Tuesday, the put a feeding tube trough the side of his neck to give him nutrition. Finally, at 6 pm on Tuesday the 17th when we picked him up, he looked and acted like himself again. The happy, tail wagging, face liking, affectionate boy that I love more than anything in the world. When we arrived home, he lay straight down in his bed, whereas before he needed help because it was so painful for him. A few hours later, he took some food from me, whereas before he would turn away. We went outside and he peed, even lifting his leg, and when we came back inside and drank. The worst is behind him, but there is still a way to go.

Kiba has been insured for as long as we’ve owned him, but it will only cover about 25% of the costs so far, and as I am currently out of work, I could not think of any other way to get through is extremely difficult situation. Any contribution, big or small, is incredibly appreciated and I would also be grateful, if you took the time to read all the way down here, if you would share on any and every social media site you have access to.

Should I be so lucky to go over the goal, the overflowing funds will go to similar charities as a way for me to “pay it forward”.
Thank you so much for your time.
