COSEBOC Needs You Now!
The Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC) was founded in 2006 by Ron Walker to connect, inspire, support, and strengthen the network of school leaders dedicated to the social, emotional, and academic development of boys and young men of color. Fourteen years later, COSEBOC remains the only national organization of practitioners solely dedicated to this mission. Despite COSEBOC’s increasing footprint across the local, regional, and national landscape, systemic educational inequities persist, and boys and young men of color are its greatest victims.
Progress in this space has been steady but incremental, yet the fight to establish and maintain academically, intellectually, and emotionally safe spaces for boys and young men of color rages on. Despite the unbridled dedication of COSEBOC’s board and staff, the battle will be difficult to sustain without your help.
As you may know, for the last thirteen years, we have hosted our signature event, COSEBOC’s annual Gathering of Leaders in major cities across the nation. Each year, this gathering brings together 500 to 1000 of the country’s most talented and committed educators, researchers, practitioners, and students with a passion for creating the conditions that promote the academic success of boys and young men of color. The Gathering of Leaders is also our most significant fundraiser and provides the financial foundation to continue our critical work year after year.
The 2020 Gathering of Leaders was scheduled for late April in Seattle, WA. Due to COVID-19 we’ve been forced to cancel this annual convening for the first time in COSEBOC’s history. Our ability to sustain the organization is directly linked to the revenue generated from the annual gathering. The cancellation of the Seattle Gathering, therefore, has threatened the very existence of COSEBOC. In order to serve educators, practitioners, community leaders, and families for another school year, we must raise $150,000.
While we remain committed to our mission and to finding innovative ways to support dedicated practitioners and emerging organizations in this era of uncertainty, we urgently need your support. Your contribution will help sustain our organization by providing the financial stability to remain an anchor organization that collaborates and partners with schools, school districts, and communities to guarantee the success of boys and young men of color.
