Callie is a 5 month old puppy that we adopted from rescue in November, after a long struggle with finding the right one after losing our sweet Toby last year. We must have gone through a million photos on Petfinder to find "the one" and knowing we could never replace Toby. It was a heartbreaking process until we found Callie. After such a painful loss, Callie somehow managed to wiggle her way into our hearts with her shy silly ways. Toby had a heart condition, and he passed unexpectedly, and we were very cautious to try to find a healthy, young puppy because we knew we couldn't handle the financial and emotional burden of taking on another special needs dog. Callie was the perfect match.
Our world was turned upside down on Sunday when Callie began twitching and her gait became unsteady. We rushed her to the hospital, were sent home and then had to rush her back when she quickly went downhill. After 2 nights being hospitalized and a battery of tests, we learned that Callie had a liver shunt and needed surgery in order to have the chance at life that she so deserves. Of course, we wanted to move forward, but Callie's shunt is within her liver, and the surgery is so intricate that every specialty hospital in the area directed us to AMC in New York City as being her best chance. We promised Callie that we would do everything we can to save her, but we can't afford the surgery she needs. Callie's surgery needs to be done immediately to give her the best chance. Doctors are confident that with this surgery, she can live a long, healthy life. Without the surgery, she will pass away.
We can't imagine our family without Callie, and we just can't bear another loss, but we need your help. We would never ask for anything for ourselves, but we need help to be able to save our sweet Callie. Her medical expenses have been over $2,000 already, and surgery is estimated at $8,000. We are applying for every grant we can find, and if we find help, we will lower our goal. We are working with a special needs rescue, A Pathway to Hope, so your donation to Callie will be tax deductible.
