Saving Amir

My beloved horse Amir shattered his leg after being kicked by another horse in the pasture on January 15th, 2021.
Now, anyone who knows Amir also knows that he is incredibly determined, opinionated, and has an amazing will to live (I had no idea just how strong before the past two weeks). As I sat there in the pasture holding his leg together as we waited for our vet to arrive I got a clear message from Amir that he wanted to live.
By the grace of God we found a brilliant veterinary surgeon who specializes in fixing broken legs that no one else can, as well as prosthetics for horses in cases where healing is not possible. He saw Amir's X-rays and told us especially given Amir's attitude that he was absolutely willing to try and fix him.
On the journey to the hospital Amir ate and drank the entire way; nickering and talking to me in his usual way. I feel without a doubt he was telling me that he knew we were going to someone who could help, that he was completely determined to live and I was making the right decision by him. His leg was very securely splinted and he of course had painkillers throughout the journey.
Amir had surgery two days later - my heart breaks to say that they were not able to save his leg. Of course my number #1 concern is for Amir's quality of life - that he will be happy and be able to enjoy his life.
The videos I have seen of other horses who lost their legs and were fitted with prosthetics at this clinic are absolutely astounding. All the horses are able to be turned out on pasture, some even gallop around with their new leg.
The picture of Amir above was taken two days after surgery - it's amazing how bright and happy he has been even after such a major operation. After coming out of anesthetic he WALKED back to his stall. He immediately figured out how to lay down and get up with ease (his leg is of course bandaged and he has a temporary prosthetic until he fully heals and is fitted with a permanent one) - I was eating a tangerine one morning when he was resting and he decided that there was no way I wasn't going to share it with him, and simply got up and told me so.
Needless to say, he enjoyed the tangerine.
He went outside for the first time since his surgery this last week.
Amir has totally amazed us with his incredible will to live - he has literally never looked back. I am allowing Amir to be in control of his life - and there is absolutely no question that he still wants to stay with me.
It will be a very long recovery process, and the costs for Amir's permanent prosthetic and his care at the hospital until he is healed and ready to go home are very significant.
