Saving Abbey from being paralysed

Donation protected
These two beautiful dogs pictured above are our mum’s furbabies; Abbey (left) and Molly (right). Abbey and Molly are sisters and are Maltese x Lhasa Apso, aged 5 years old.

Abbey and Molly came into our mum and her partner Frank’s life shortly after their beloved Mini Foxy, Tilly, passed away. Tilly left a big hole in their heart and Abbey and Molly helped them through their grief.

On Saturday 15th July 2017, Molly was taken to the Vets as she had a hunched back, was walking funny, unable to jump up (even onto a small step), not eating and appeared in pain. The Vet was not able to confidently identify the issue however when pushing on her spine, Molly reacted. The Vet prescribed her with pain killers and she was on her way.

On Monday 17th July, Abbey presented with the same symptoms but much worse. Abbey’s walk was very wobbly and appeared much more distressed than Molly. We took Abbey to the Vet and we had them stumped. The Vet could not understand how two dogs presented with the exact same symptoms days apart. On Tuesday, Abbey returned to the Vet and had further testing which ruled out a few possible conditions i.e. pancreatitis. Her health began to decline and was required to go on a drip and stay overnight. Molly stayed with Abbey to give her company and comfort.

Wednesday 18th, Abbey’s back legs gave way and she was now presenting as paralysed from the waist down. Abbey also had blood in her urine. Two Vets examined Abbey and still unsure what the cause of this was as it appeared both dogs had a spinal issue. Abbey was then sent to the Underwood Animal Hospital to be examined by a specialist. It was determined that Abbey has a spinal condition and was required to have dye injected into her spine to further identify the issue.

Abbey had surgery the same night and it was discovered she had a slipped disc causing pain and paralysis. The costs of the spinal surgery and post operation care is costing a minimum of $7000. Our goal is to raise as much as possible to assist with the cost of the surgery and the additional vet costs involved.

Last year on May 7th, our mum and her partner Frank finally tied the knot and got married after 9 years of being together. Sadly, 5 weeks later, we lost our Frank due to cancer unbeknownst to us all. It was a huge shock to our family and not only has the financial costs of paying for a funeral and the cost of living has been hugely challenging, but our mum continues to grieve heavily for the loss of her husband. Abbey and Molly has been a huge support for mum and has helped her get through each day. They are her world.

Molly has made some improvements however is still in some pain. Molly is still taking her medication to manage this. We do not know what her future holds and will continue to monitor her closely.

We appreciate any donation, big or small and thank you from the bottom of our hearts

Thursday 20th July:
Our little Abbey post surgery. Still in some pain but doing well. Abbey is still in the Animal Hospital and will be for some time until she is ready to come home.
We have been advised by the Specialist that this could potentially happen to Abbey again in her life.
