Today, November 30th is Stories’ 12 year anniversary. Its been a wild 1.2 decades. In our first five years the survival of the shop was most certainly a delicate question. We stayed committed to the idea that every community deserves a quality book store and unique third place. We held ourselves accountable and corrected if we weren’t living up to that responsibility.
Fast forward a few years and we’re a veritable success story. A de facto town square for Echo Park. A patio packed with events, café tables where countless plans, plots and affairs were born, and shelves lined with books hand picked for their singular value and promise.
Now, instead of looking forward to our most necessary and robust month of sales, we’re staring into the void. Any business is like the proverbial shark, keep moving or drown. New covid restrictions are forcing us to put on ice much of our day to day and the consequence will be fatal. To make it this far we've taken on tons of new interest bearing debt, utilized the PPP loan and done some fancy ass acrobatics that got us back to a sustainable place. We had adapted and begun to thrive again. These new restrictions and the loss of the our usual Holiday bonanza have left us with no choice but to turn to our community for help.
It is difficult to ask you all for help getting through, but unlike pride, a lil humility never killed anyone. We are eternally grateful that we’ve grown into what we are. If you know you know, and we love you.
The donations here will be going to the staff and to the store. They will ensure our collective survival and guarantee Stories will be here for as long as youll have us . XOXOXOXO
