In the last 18 months, 36 puppies and still counting!
Mama Girl, a stray dog, possibly a yellow lab mix, has been a popular and loved member of a southern Maryland community. Her frequent jaunts down the side of the road, as if the white line was a path painted just for her, are a regular sight in this small town. When the horns are honking, everyone knows they are serenading to Mama on the highway.
In the last eighteen months, she has had four litters of puppies; averaging nine little needle toothed mouths. Despite the laborious task of rearing such an arduous brood, she’s always a devoted mom, and will bark when her puppies are taken away; if she only knew they have been placed in loving homes.
No one knows exactly when or how Mama came to be loose; her life history is a complete mystery, and one that will probably never be known. Her story so far is one of survival, puppies, fear, and solitude; she runs whenever anyone comes near. So let’s write a new story for Mama, let bygones be bygones, it’s her future that matters most!
Time is upon us! And time is of the essence too. Mama is due to come into season again potentially within the next four weeks. I have been asked to make her capture before that happens.
Hmmm, loose for eighteen months? Has anyone tried to catch her? Yes indeed, but Mama is a savant, she knows every nuance of her environment and is just too smart and too skeptical to fall for any trickery. Thus the colossal challenge that lies ahead.
Fortunately, Mama has many people that look out for her; compassionate hearts that have become attached, from afar, if you know what I mean. Mama also has a daily angel in her life, in fact two. A special animal loving couple, a woman named Karen and her husband, provide food for Mama; interestingly, Mama does not dine out, she prefers her food to go.
Where do you shop? Mama is paws up for Target.
Karen knows the menu and all of Mama’s favorites, but how it’s served is part of the delight of dining. Mama receives her food in a white bag from Target. Yes, it must be a white bag from Target. This oddity is a testament to how sensitive to change Mama can be. If the food is dropped off using a gray bag from Walmart, Mama won’t touch it. Sorry Walmart.
I’ve been tasked with the challenge of capturing Mama. So far, I’ve had one opportunity to view Mama in her environment; from a substantial distance, I watched her open her Target bag of goodies, inspect the contents, then proceed to carry her plastic parcel of food stash down the street and off into the sunset.
As of this writing, I have most of a plan formulated for her capture. As the next few weeks, or so, unfold, I will study Mama’s routine, and make any necessary refinements. The initial estimated cost is projected to be $2850. That amount, none of which goes in my pocket, is what it will take to cover the expenses to make her capture possible. On behalf of Mama and everyone that cares about her, and in honor of all stray dogs that deserve a chance at new beginnings, I am asking for your generous support. Any additional funds remaining after her capture is complete will then be put toward her veterinary care, or foster care. It is anticipated that she will need extended time to learn how to live in human care.
