This is harder to write than any 15-page paper I've ever been assigned. Our mom, wife, aunt, friend, Sunday school teacher and mentor for all things cooking and crafting, Christine, has been diagnosed with Stage 2 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. She has breast cancer. The beautiful thing is that she found it early enough for doctors to talk about her diagnosis as if it's a really bad version of the flu. We are so blessed that she found it today and not tomorrow. So, our first step is a lumpectomy. Assuming we raise enough money to pay for her surgery, she will then start 4 aggressive weeks of radiation. During this time, she will be out of work. When she is working, she makes about $1,000/month after taxes and insurance premiums, which are around $600/month. During this time, she will be without her regular income but will still be expected to pay her insurance premium of $600 in order to keep her coverage.The surgery alone will be $3,000 out of pocket before insurance kicks in and the hospital wants the full amount the day of or they will wrecklessly reschedule her surgery for the next available appointment. We can't afford the surgery but we absolutely can't afford to wait. Finances can't be the reason her positive and reassuring consultations turn into scarier, less hopeful conversations. My mom's surgery is scheduled for September 7, 2017. I am working my salary job, Monday through Friday 8-5PM, driving for Lyft after work and working as a waitress on the weekends to help pay for at least her surgery. My brother, Richard, is working overtime to help with costs as well. We just need help. Please, help us help our mom.
