Support affordable early childhood education, a small business, and a fantastic teacher. greatstartpreschool.tumblr.com

If you ask for advice about preschools in West Seattle, you're guaranteed to find a family with glowing recommendations for Susan Wright's teaching style and abilities.

After working for Bright Horizons and then the Delridge Community Center, Susan started an independent preschool of her own in 2013. She has decades of experience in childcare and early childhood education, and has amassed countless recommendations from parents around the Seattle area over that time.

Great Start Preschool has lost its lease at its current location, and despite searching for another appropriate location for months, Susan has yet to find one. Her wealth of supplies collected over a lifetime in education have gone into storage, and the future of this excellent school is insecure.

Susan charges far less than the usual private preschool tuition rate, and consequently doesn’t make a profit.

True to its name, Susan’s school has given so many children a great start on their education. Her skill, experience, and dedication is a great resource for our future, but we are in danger of losing it.

My daughter's experience this year has been delightful to watch. Her social development and problem solving abilities have blossomed in the environment Susan creates. I want other kids to have access to that environment, too.

Please help us raise money for a deposit and rent for a new location and provide a stipend for Susan’s summer living expenses during the search.

Curriculum Details
Great Start Preschool provides classroom curriculum that is universal, integrating many concepts and inspiring learning through self-direction and curiosity. Art, music, literature, science and nature provide endless opportunities for discovery. Children learn about science, enrich their language, experience art, use natural elements for math activities and social awareness, and develop an appreciation for nature's beauty. The classroom combines the philosophies of Montessori, Reggio, Emergent, and STEM curricula.

The 3 year old curriculum is focused on introducing young children to a more structured atmosphere than home or day-care typically provides. Children learn basic classroom routines, put away activities when they are finished, communicate and cooperate with peers, walk in a line, and listen to simple instructions. The following year, her pre-K program is more structured and focused on specific learning goals. A half day of structured time provides ample opportunity for success within a young child’s attention span. Even during free play, Susan is always on the lookout for an “emergent curriculum” opportunity.
