Today was one of the worst and most difficult days of my life. I once heard the story of how a father, rushing around on his way to work, thought that he had dropped off his infant at the day care center only to realize while sitting at his desk drinking coffee on a hot summer day that he had actually not dropped off the baby. That story has always stuck with me whether it was true or not.
Today, my wife and I have learned what that type of pain feels like.
Chester the dog is the sweetest, handsomest, most gentle, little boy in the world. He's only 5.5 months old and has been an amazing gift to our family. Chester is a Great Dane/Pointer mix and we adopted him from a local rescue called "Caring Canine Connections." I love him as much as any one of my kids. He's a family member and a pack member.
We were excited to bring our four kids and Chester to cross country practice for a walk while the kids ran. After we loaded everyone into the car, which can be a daunting process at best, we headed out to the local highway. It was rush hour and when making a left onto this road one needs to acclerate to get in. We drove about 1.5 miles before we realized that the man driving behind us was waving his hands in the air as if something was wrong with our car. I quickly pulled the minivan over and the guy screams one word out the window: DOG!!!!
My wife looked behind the seat where Chester always lays so quietly and she screamed when she realized that he wasn't there.
We have been training him with the hidden fence in our yard and so when we are outside we tie him to the bike rack on the back of our car. That's where this poor little animal was when we pulled out of our driveway. I only wish someone had beeped, flashed lights, pulled along side us, anything!!!! I would never blame anyone else for this tragedy and as I told the police officer who took my statement at the vet hospital, I wish that it was me who was dragged down the highway.
Chester's wounds are severe and he will need extensive medical care in order to survive. Its a miracle that he survived at all. He is a very strong pup, must be the Dane in him.
I believe that he can survive, but I need financial help as his medical costs could be more than $10,000 in total. He will need skin graphs, surgery, regular anestesia, and new dressings daily.
We will need to act quickly in terms of finances as $10,000 is more than our large family can absorb. If no one gives a dollar, we will use what we can even if its our kid's college funds to help save him. I only hope that money can help him.
