Help Save Bones's Eye

Who am I?

Hello. My name is Jenny and I'm an English as a Foreign Language teacher based in Northern Spain where I live with my fur baby, a white Turkish Van called Bones who is named after Dr Leonard McCoy from Star Trek: The Original Series because of her white fur and bright blue eyes.

(Hola a todos. Me llamo Bones. No hablo inglés porque soy española.)

The Backstory

I adopted Bones eight months ago from an animal shelter in Spain (http://www.albergueoviedo.es/).

According to the woman who runs the shelter, Bones (then called Blanca) had been living on the streets for some time before she was bought to the shelter where she spent four long years waiting for someone to take her home with them. She wasn't the most attractive of cats. Nor the most friendly. She hid away in the room where the cats were kept and only came out after my friend and I had been sitting on the floor playing with the other cats for thirty minutes.

She was very shy, very skittish, and very uncertain about everything but she eventually came up to me and butted my hand with her hand. I fell in love.

(She wants to leave the shelter, but she's scared.)

I'd had cats when I was a child but I'd never had my own pet since moving out of my parents home. Bones was my first. I spent a week going back and forth over whether I should bring her home with me but I was besotted and so, a week later, armed with my new carrier and a lot of excitement, I brought her home on 7th July 2017.

(I think she feels warm and safe, but it's very hard to tell.)

It hasn't been smooth sailing. She has had health problem after health problem due to spending so long in an animal shelter with other cats who were bringing in diseases from the streets.

Diseased and rotten teeth
Intestinal bacteria
Digestion problems
Respiratory problems
Ear infections
Conjunctivitis
Lowered immune system

I have just been able to keep up with the growing vet costs due to payment plans and a sudden influx of work that I've been grateful for, however I've now reached my financial limit.

What Happened

On Sunday, Bones suffered from a corneal perforation and iris prolapse (https://www.petplace.com/article/cats/pet-health/iris-prolapse-in-cats/).

It's a very serious medical issue that required immediate emergency medical attention and surgery to repair the damage, as well as after care of daily anti-inflammatory injections and antibiotic eye drops every two hours.

(Because it's so horrific to look at, I won't add a picture but you can Google it. Fair warning, it's horrible.)

Thanks to her dislike of eye drops, my torso now looks as though Freddy Krueger paid me a visit.

The Costs

The surgery to correct the iris prolapse cost €700 and it needs to be paid before the surgeon will operate on Bones again. This isn't money that I have readily available. I'm able to pay for adhoc veterinary care but emergency care is out of my reach and I'm unable to have insurance in Spain because she is a rescue cat.

I've assured the vet that I'll be able to pay the cost of the bill because the alternative would have been to not have the surgery at all, which wasn't an option as Bones was in a large amount of pain, and so I find myself in the situation of desperately trying to find the money to pay the €700 bill.

(Not a happy cat here.)

How You Can Help

I would appreciate it if you would be able to donate something towards helping me pay this emergency surgery bill. Any amount you are able to give would go a very long way to making sure that Bones is able to continue receiving the treatment that she needs.

If you also have any experience with caring for a sick animal, I would love to hear about it as I'm finding it very difficult and very stressful to make sure that my fur baby is okay.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you have Facebook, Twitter, or any other form of social media, if you could also share this page I would be very grateful.

(Happier, sleepier times.)
