Save Villa Carmen in Puerto Rico
Tax deductible
At this time of turbulence in Puerto Rico, the arts are a force to stimulate healing, growth, and innovation for our community.
Right now we are asking for support to fund the purchase and renovation of this historic building and restore it from the damage of hurricane Irma and Maria.
Your contributions will go directly towards the renovations of this facility including:
- Sealing the roof and preventing further damages
- Structural support to concrete walls
- Plumbing and electrical work
- Restoring the balcony and original inlaid tiles of the facade
and more
This building provides artist residency programs for local and international displaced artists, programs and workshops for the community, and exhibitions that share a variety of artwork. We are also renovating a space where visitors to the island can stay on the property to experience Villa Carmen Atelier and see the historic neighborhood of Puerta de Tierra.
Built in 1932, the iconic Villa Carmen building is one of the last architectural representations of its kind on the island. The restoration and revival of this building represent an investment and commitment to the culture of Puerto Rico and the importance of the arts in shaping its future. Through exhibitions, events, and workshops Villa Carmen is a fixture in the community providing opportunities to engage in art, conversation, and uplifting voices that are historically marginalized or erased.
Similar to communities all over the United States, Puerta de Tierra is up against gentrification and development. The hurricane created more opportunities for real estate investors to move into Puerto Rico and take advantage of the displacement. By November 2019, the building's contract will terminate and will permit the owner to sell it.
Puerto Rico - NO SE VENDE - "Puerto Rico - NOT FOR SALE"
We welcome you all to visit the museum, apply to a residency opportunity, and participate in cutting-edge projects and conversations around art, truth, freedom, and artistic expression.
