I have been invited to attend Our Oceans, Our Legacy Youth Leadership Summit led by Sustainable Oceans Alliance in Bali, Indonesia on October 29th and 30th of 2018. The Youth Leadership Summit will allow me to interact with high-level ocean leaders, participate in breakout sessions, and gain insights on my research project, which focuses on managing abandoned, lost, and discarded (ALD) fishing gear in Atlantic Canada. Included in the Summit is an opportunity to attend the second day of Our Oceans Conference, where I will be able to network with policymakers, corporate leaders, heads of international organizations, foundations and NGOs. The theme of the 2018 conference will focus on leaving a legacy for future generations and will cover various topics including marine pollution and sustainable fisheries, two topics highly related to my graduate research and personal interests.
Attending the Youth Leadership Summit and Our Oceans Conference would allow for growth in my field of research and help support my career in marine management. I have been longing to connect and learn from global leaders, and believe that this opportunity can help further my knowledge, experience and skills with respect to my line of work and interests. Although the Summit and Conference take global perspectives, it will directly translate to conservation work in Canada especially around abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear, commonly known as ghost gear. Allowing experts to give feedback on my research will help take my work and management recommendations to the next level, and hopefully, put them into action.
While this is an incredible opportunity, it is not funded. International flights, especially from Eastern Canada, are expensive, and being a graduate student, my financial situation has put me in a position where I cannot afford this trip. Therefore, I am turning to my existing network and am asking for help to actualize this incredible opportunity.
In helping fund my trip through a donation to my fundraising campaign, you will be allowing me to share my work globally, where I will promote your support in any way that I can.
