My husband and I have been operating a small privately funded horse rescue for 15 years. We currently have 21 horses that we care for, but recently were asked to assist with the largest horse neglect case in our area that has at least 13 horses involved, possibly a couple others that haven't been accounted for as well. We have removed 7 horses from the property and there are additional ones still on site that need care. Five of the horses that have been removed scored a 1 on the body condition scale and it is presumed that every mare is bred, including a small filly that is only 18 months old. They are currently being housed at a county property, but all of the care, feed and work is being handled by our family and a small group of friends. The feed bill is large and will continue to grow, the need for farrier, dental care and vet care is continues to grow as well. While the legal process runs it course, we will continue to care for the ones we have removed, as we work to also provide care for those remaining at the property. The first 3 weeks has been about $2,000 in expenses and this is just the beginning. We ask that you consider helping us to save the neglected horses. This is expected to be at least a 6 month venture and we are anticipating that foals will start being born in roughly 5 months based on confirmation for one mare that has been fully vet checked.
