The Dictionary Hostel in London has been home to thousands of guests over the past 10 years and we are now fighting for survival. As an independent hostel, started through selling our home to start up, the Dictionary Hostel has been my baby.
Travel has always been incredibly important to us and we believe truly in the philosophy that if we all travel, cultural barriers will be broken down, horizons will be expanded and future generations will be kinder to each other.
With Covid-19 hitting the world hard, we too face bankruptcy. Banks are reluctant to lend despite our government asking them to. And the travel industry has ground to a standstill. As an independent hostel I fear that only the larger chains will have the funds to survive this crisis and the small operators will go bust.
The time will come when we all need to reconnect with each other and we want to be here for all our wonderful guests when it does.
I am reaching out to all of you who have shared our space in the past, all of you who love travel, all who believe in the survival of independent hostels, all who wish to see a much loved brand make it through, to help us raise funds to see us weather this period of uncertainty so that we can continue to be a home for you when you are in London.
Funds will be used to continue to pay our staff, many of whom live at the hostel and cannot be furloughed as we still have a small number of guests, who, if we shut our doors, would be homeless because of the borders closed in their own countries. We will further use the funds to cover the basic costs of running the hostel for the next three to six months, with the cleaning and laundry and food and water and heating bills covered. As owners, we have already forgone our salaries and will not be taking anything out of the business for the foreseeable future.
This money will be the difference between us surviving and us closing our doors forever.
